When the hardwood floors are older and the wood flooring separation continues, it is probably time for a refinishing or replacing areas or the entire floor. I am buying a house that has old hardwood floors that look great.

I have a new home with oak hardwood floors.
Old hardwood floors separating. In the beginning all the floors were nice and tight but now there are some areas that are separated by as much as 1/8. I'm having a humidifier installed as soon as the snow lets up enough for the heating guys to get up the street. They weren't there in the summer. solid 3/4 hardwoods will expand and contract with seasonal changes in moisture.
You can choose to use room humidifiers or furnace humidifiers; But to answer a common question: The floor was put down in august and started to separate in december.
There are some gaps between the boards (the short sides), some as big as about 1/2 inch. Is this normal or was the installation defective. But lately, they’re looking a bit worn.
The problem is magnified when the boards were not tightly laid in the first place. Gapping in engineered hardwood can be due to many factors, including (but not limited to) the material's manufacturing, changes in humidity, and the type and quality of the installation. Another exacerbating condition is water damage.
Wood expands and contracts with seasonal differences in humidity, and the older a floor gets, the greater the chance that these movements will. Understandably, homeowners generally do whatever they can to maintain the integrity of these floors. They began separating when the weather turned cold.
But those could only be fixed by replacing the hardwood, and we didn’t want to take the project that far. The boards are not nailed down due to the concrete. (we had a pipe break and had to redo a lot of things).
Dear martin summer time installation in hot […] I chose to stain the floor special walnut because it was a good medium shade between the raw wood and the dark water stains. Like the scratches in the hallway from where the dogs love to play.
The best times to repair hardwood floors are april and october. Remember the 1914 book that referred to tile floors as “death to china”? Instead, it is put together almost like a puzzle with planks snugly fitted together.
It made the stains less obvious, and gave the floors an overall even color. I live by the ocean, so we get a lot of horizontal rain, and some windows facing the water now have constant condensation between the glass. I bought a hygrometer and the humidity is about 55% inside and about 60% in the crawl space (which is insulated but maybe not moisture barriered).
Because the new hardwood floor cannot move even though it's separated. This is especially noticeable with site finished floors whose final appearance after the work has been done is near flawless. Often, floating engineered wood floors are installed over existing tile, vinyl or another floor.
One house with a newer addition had a large gap develop between the old hardwood floor and the new hardwood floor. I'm thinking the old subfloor is moving? That’s a case for wood, too!
It’s a tale as old as time. In some locations, the space is wider than a credit card. Often it's a floor owner concerned with new hardwood floors separating or gapping.
If you’ve noticed splits in your hardwood floors , you’re probably a little distressed—especially if your floors are on the new side. And, unfortunately, that’s when hardwood floor splitting, also known as checking, is most likely to occur. Both will help minimize the chance of gaps showing up in your hardwood floors down the road.
How to fix old hardwood floors with gaps and cupping. When removing old flooring, create a new butt joint on just the side of the plank that’s closest to the hole or where the damage ends. Yes, it can still have gaps.
I spent months looking for salvaged flooring that was identical to what we have in the rest of the house. Why are my hardwood floors splitting? And the rough patch in the corner where you didn’t notice the standing water fo
We also had a similar problem with our pergo in the winter, but that only separated in two or three places. Anyway, some areas between the planks are separating and the company has come back to fill them in but. Almost every wood floor will show some separation between boards, particularly in the winter months when homes are heated and the air is dry.
What can i do to get rid of this? You’ve had hardwood floors since you first purchased your home. I found a lot of old maple and reclaimed pine, but no salvaged tongue and groove 2” wide x ½” thick rift and quartered white oak.
A floating laminate floor is not glued, nailed, stapled or otherwise secured to the subflooring. We can hear nails pop. Old windows are often major leakage sites, as are recessed lights and other holes in ceilings and floors.
Engineered hardwood flooring is designed to minimize gaps due to expansion and contraction of the wood. There is an addition that is newer and the hardwood is installed on a concrete slab. It was time to stain the floors.
How to fix separating hardwood floors. The new hardwood floors are 3/4 tongue/groove solid wood and he did use a floor nail gun. Whether your floors are newly installed or you’ve had hardwood floors for years, you can use humidifiers to reduce the likelihood of gaps.
We have site finished oak floors that are about 7 mos old. We determined that the floor sheathing in the new addition had shrunk less than 0.1%, but this shrinkage that accumulated over the 48 ft long addition was enough to pull the new floor away from the existing and leave a 3/8” wide gap. If you've already filled gaps but the wood flooring separation continues or floorboards are slipping, it's time to consult a contractor.
The only option to repair hardwood floors at this point is to cut out the stained floorboards and install new ones.
